The Betamax story.

The history of Sony's Betamax (TM) format is not so unusual these days, in fact there is a striking resemblance with the HD wars between BluRay and HD DVD.
The tale starts before 1974, when the technology to record video data on magnetic tape was maturing. Such recording sounds like a simple task, until you consider the shear volume of information that needs to be recorded. The speed with which magnetic tape can be transported past the read/write heads of a record/playback machine is limited. However, this limit was overcome by using a circular recording drum that rotated at an angle and this recorded its data at an angle.
A quick look inside and modern video recorder will show you that this technology has not changed even today.
In the early 70's several Japanese manufactures were ready to launch home video recording equipment. Sony was the first to consider their machine ready for the domestic market. They were unaware that JVC were ready to launch their VHS format.
The battle between the two formats centred on recording quality, tape running time and backing from the movie studios.
By the Mid 80's Betamax was as good as dead and VHS reigned supreme.
